When you came out as straight,

Did they pretend not to hear you?

Did their eyes fill with hate,

When you told them you were straight?

When you said you felt attraction,

What was their reaction?

When you told them who you liked,

Was only the opposite gender,

When you finally found the courage,

To tell people how you felt,

Did they hush your secret,

Or say they didn't want to hear it? ...

Did they tell you:

"Stop it! You'll break your mothers heart"

When you said you were cis?

Did they get your pronouns wrong?

When you said you wanted kids,

Did they ever shame you?

Did they tell you it was wrong?

Did they fight for you to change your mind?

When you got bullied in school,

Did anybody help you?

Or were they afraid of your sexuality?

Did they recoil at you touch?

Did they misgender you?

When you insisted you were cis?

Did they say it wasn't real?

Not understanding how you feel,

Did they harass you online?

Did they call you slurs?

Did they ever beat you?

Did they erase you?

Did they ban you from public spaces?

Did you ever feel unsafe to be yourself?

Did they let you use your preferred bathrooms?

"You make me sick"

"It's just a phase"

"Too young to know"

"That's disgusting"

"freak"

"abomination"

"breeder"

"trash"

Did they ever question you?

Even though you knew it with all of your heart,

Did their eyes fill with hate,

When you told them you were straight?
