The Stranger

The moon’s abed with vapor quilts The heavens dance their round A stranger on a path unknown His purpose is oath-bound His tread is steady but look sharp! Beware the lonely moor For when he comes he will not knock; One will answer the door A great black dog lopes at his side No lantern lights his way His eyes burn like hellfire None can keep him at bay His tread is steady but look sharp! Beware the lonely moor For when he comes he will not knock; One will answer the door Life’s pleasures have no hold on him No friend with whom to boast Never to feel a lover’s touch His mem’ries just a ghost His tread is steady but look sharp! Beware the lonely moor For when he comes he will not knock; One will answer the door
