Street Lights (prose poem)
Her fear is constant. It never ends when the sun is up and it increases when she goes to walk home at night. She is scared of what could happen between point A and point B. Her only comfort is the street lights but, her fear is an echo. An echo of her thoughts that project into the dark making her think someone is there and maybe its right. She speeds up her pace, feet pounding like a drum left out in a kindergarten classroom. Soon she is sprinting sweat pouring down her back like a waterfall, and suddenly she not sure she's alone anymore and her street lights bring no comfort. Her mouth a boneyard of teeth broken from biting down on themselves. She stops suddenly like a game of red light green light. She fights like a gladiator fighting against the coliseum beast but she has no experience and the beast takes her. She will lie forgotten like all the rest have gathering dust until she gives into the void, her skin painted with tender blues, lips a cracked bloody red, chest unmoving. She will never make it home and no one will care to search, society will carry on cause this is now an accepted way of life.
