Streetlights

It was you and me in the backseat, closer than necessary but still with space to spare; it was dark, and the only source of light was that which was coming from the intermittent streetlights that passed by, a steady interval of fading and growing incandescence.

And it was under the green-white glow that I saw your face, and could think only scrambled thoughts as I was struck with your beauty, of each feature in a unique shadow pertaining to that second, one which constantly changed as we passed each lamplight. And each of those features; the line of your jaw, the soft curve of your cheek, the indescribable and mesmerizing warmth of your eyes; it all became one to form beauty of another realm, one not of flowers and bright skies and pretty shiny things, but of a definition of its own; in that moment you were beauty itself.

And so as you reached for my hand, it was as if time ground to a halt; no longer was the radio droning on, no longer could I hear our friends in the front seat, no longer did I see streetlights and car lights; it was only you and me, floating in the darkness. And it was not the action itself that brought me to this place of wonder and a new form of existence; it was not the thought of a naive girl who was only glad to have made contact; it was the feelings that rushed in, filling my head and heart, drowning me in emotion. It was all of them at once; feelings of comfort and safety and calm, yet also unsureness and excitement. And in response to this, I felt joy on levels that are still indescribable, joy that felt refreshing and new and foreign, yet welcome in my mind.

In that single moment, overwhelmed by feelings, I could only fully embrace the moment, fully embrace such a seemingly simple action that did everything but fill my emptiness with colors of warmth, colors impossible to give word or description to; I felt a new way as the moment went on, a moment in which I could only partially fathom how great it was my love for you was. A pure and innocent love that no words can do true justice to, a love that cannot be compared to any other I have felt before, a love that swallowed me whole.

In that moment, everything was simply good. Everything was going to be okay. I had not a worry in the world, and all I had on my mind, my mind that at any given time is being pulled by thoughts in a million different directions, all I could think of was you. You were everything for a simple moment.

And to an outsider, it was nothing more than two friends. I did not seemingly react to the outside world; I did not give a hint to the earth-moving thoughts and feelings in my mind. In reality, I simply squeezed your hand tight, gave a smile, and let it pass.

But it was so much more than that. So much more, under those green-white streetlamps, which will forever define the moment I can find no comparison to, in life, in my dreams- in time so far there has been not a single minute, not even a second like that one.

And I doubt anything will be able to compare.
