Striving

Calm pervades the air As the warrior, in desperation prepares A feeling that should not be there When into death’s eyes, he stares And while he packs with steady hands Insouciant does his companion remain Oblivious to that which his friend withstands But the warrior knows he must sustain Throughout this punishment of mistakes From his youth, and consequences of The pain from which in others still aches As compassion away from himself he would shove In favor of success, money, and power But never in favor of love As the bloody path he took would only empower Feelings of hate and deceit and evil thereof And now as he set out to make his amends To those who he’d wronged To him, all would someday commend That peace that for which he now longed Peace not from demons that invade his mind Driving fear of death far from his soul Leaving him merely with fear of those of like kind For it was they he could no longer control So as he set out on his penitent mission Not for his own soul would he pray But that his life, others would one day survey
