Stronger Than You'd Think

if gazes were lasers i'd be smoldering

this is a sea of faces and people are floundering

drowning

desperate to save themselves

to reach the surface and breathe in the sweet air of acknowledgement

regardless of who they must push down and drown on the way up there

makeup and high heels and hair gel become flotation devices

and i alone can swim

i am not bound by the rules of the masses

i am swept up in the rain and wind and anchored by the earth

i am a child born of stardust and forged by galaxies

with every click of my heels and motion of my arms i feel eyes drawn to me

so what if i am plain, if i am ordinary

if i am short or chubby or isolated or dull

so what if i am not popular

if i am not talented

if i am not exactly like you

if being normal means to drown then thank goodness i am me
