The Struggle

I got lost in the gridlock.

Caused my own asphyxiation.

Now it’s time

to throw this elephant off my chest.

Cracked ribs and bruised lungs.

Hacking cough, cough.

Slowly sputtering back to life.

Now to climb out of this abyss.

So much darkness.

Bloody palms and torn up fingernails

from the jagged rock.

Desperate eyes searching

for that ever elusive light.

Aching muscles and weary bones.

I can’t stop though.

There is too much to live for.

I want to smile again,

and fill my heart until

love flows through

every bloody valve and vessel.

Until it overflows

and spills out of me.

So I think of all of that

as I continue climbing.

Breath like huff, huff.

I think of days filled with sunshine

and oceans filled with soft ripples.

Bread topped with butter and honey

and strawberries swimming in whipped cream.

Almost there now.

Heart electrified again.

Beats like ba bum.
