Struggling Artist

Writing a poem,

letting it all flow,

makes me sometimes wonder

how else it could go?

Could I be a writer?

Could I be a poet?

Rather than a struggling student

I could be a struggling artist.

But why give up on one dream

just to save another?

Both, I think,

I can complete,

but time is far too short.

Instead of both at once,

should I do one then the other?

Finish school and live my dream

then as old age declines my body,

my mind will still remain.

Enough, I hope

to write all the poems

I couldn’t in my youth.
