The Substance That Keeps Me Going

I can't physically see it,

But I recognize the objects that bring it to fruition

I can't physically feel it,

But why does it make my skin crawl and hairs stand on end?

I can't physically eat it,

But why do I feel that I get weaker without it?

I can't physically smell it,

But I know every melody has a distinct flavor and texture

I can physically hear it,

So why does it penetrate my body and influence my emotions?

I can mentally hear it,

So why does it take control of my body as I follow the beat?

Music is the substance that I can't live without

The nothingness that fills the small emptiness I harbor

Pleasant and tranquil when my mind is burned-out

Loud and violent when I'm done and just want to shout

It’s the temporary solution to my procrastination

Energy when I’m about to crash and power down

A comfort always available 24/7

From when I wake up to starting homework at eleven

Offering motivation when everything seems impossible

Giving support when stress piles and deadlines approach

Sloppy work would be composed without it

With tunes, early mornings don’t feel like shit

It’s an energy efficient, environmentally friendly fuel

A track that serve to ignite the thrusters in me

The sound that keeps my heart rate high

And makes me sweat till my shirt won't stay dry

The force that keeps my sides from giving out

And my mind focused on the task at hand

The boost I need to kick the soccer ball farther

Even when my legs sting and breathing gets harder

The constant companion as I walk down the street

The noise negation that distances the world from me

The mood mitigation that prevents my suppressed anger from showing

The personal pleasure that ensures I'm always (seemingly) glowing

Offers me access to the memories of days long past

Presently keeps me sane and focused on any task

Grants me hope for a future that’s not quite concrete

But all in all, I'm just waiting till I can finally leave this street

But living without it?

Surely, you can't be serious

Because the moment the beat cannot be played

It's guaranteed I'm beyond being saved
