Substitute Blues

I wake up each day, kiss my wife, and go to school

pretending to be something I desperately wish was authentic.

Substitution gets me there, but its just a tool

to let me play out my dream of teaching, and not pretending.

History, science, math, and gym I'll fill in

but Literature is how i can show these kids they matter.

Language can sound the depths of their hunger

and lay a foundation that stops the flux the feel.

Children will replace us all one day

I can teach them how to outdo everyone of us,

teach them how to mean what they say,

and once again make knowledge contageous.
