Success’ Other Face
In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God
And the Word was God.
He was God in the beginning.
Through Him, all things were made,
Without Him nothing was made that has been made.
In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.
The Light shines in the darkness… but the darkness has not understood it!
And how can we understand?
When we’re trapped in a one-tract mindset
Slaving away for a system with no personality
That tells us that the pursuit of happiness is the key
To fill in the void of loneliness that burns in our hearts.
We’re consumed with visions of success and prosperity
Working without stopping to achieve all we think we can be.
We work so hard we’ve become disconnected with reality
And material success becomes all our eyes can see.
By the time we achieve success, we’ve already become numb,
Having no interest in sharing with friends and family our love.
Because money is all we want! Money is all we need!
Because with money comes happiness, power, and prestige!
So what if we work ourselves to death? It’s for a greater cause!
Therefore greed consumes us twenty four-seven without pause!
We’re dedicated to a vision of rising to the top
From rags to riches, our climb will never stop
Success, he drives us onward
Encouraging us to give him all of ourselves with defenses lowered.
But little do we know…
That success, well he has another face
A face lined with scars
A mouth filled with venomous fangs
And a tongue that dances with Hell’s own flames.
Shrouded in darkness, with wings broken from the fall
Over the whole Earth he stands tall!
The masses bow down to him, worshipping at his feet
We offer him up sacrifices of our love, hopes, and dreams.
He promised us success! He promised us power!
He promised us gratification for our greedy desires!
“All hail Beelzebub, holder of power’s keys!”
“All hail Beelzebub, destroyer of love’s gleam!”
We’ve become so blind we can’t even conceive
That Satan has hidden himself in plain sight for all the world to see.
He presides over every selfish thought, every shrewd move,
and every evil attempt to use money to distort what's true
And you might say, “Satan? I don’t believe in him!”
But O sleeper! Wake up! For he believes in you!
For one moment, let me be honest and true:
If you obsessively worship your selfish desire for success, you’re worshipping Lucifer too!
You see, he’s convinced us that to find joy, we must work harder
And by and by, the rift between us and Love grows farther.
Next thing we know, we’ve become nothing but mere corpses, lifeless and cold
Because success has convinced us to crucify our salvation upon a cross of gold!
And how easy we forget the Cross was never once adorned with gold
Rather, it was christened with the blood of the most humble Man the world would know
Humbly, He struggled up to Golgotha’s hill
Naked, beaten, and bleeding, He willingly accepted the kill!
And as He gave His final breath, whispering that it was done
The darkness rejoiced, because it thought that death had won.
But suddenly the tomb shook, unable to contain Him any longer
My Lord burst out gloriously, trampling over Lucifer’s lies with all power!
You see, this is the greatest success story to ever take place
Because to win, you have to come in last place.
It doesn’t matter if over the world the wealthy tower
All you have to do is submit yourselves to God’s great power.
Though you may be weak, He’ll raise you up again.
So that you can stand victoriously with Him when all time comes to an end.
He’s waiting for you with open arms, can’t you see?
So join Him with me, and together we can change this world ransacked by Satan’s destructive, disgusting greed.
