Supermarket Chicks

to those supermarket chicks

chilled, shelled, yolk

un-nested eggs

abandoned folk

or even, never nested eggs,

dont worry

you’ll be alright

baby bear,

when you see that,

the bowl of your porridge is cold

the two bigger bowls

are even colder

and they tell you

“you. can. not. survive””

you’ll be alright

They say that your environment dictates who you become

that your past imprints itself into your future

that autonomy is just an 8 letter word

we cannot be craftsmen

of ourselves

the mere thought of defying destiny

is unheard

fate is what rules us, they say

they understand that

we are dealing with the cards dealt to us

without guidance

the two lights that govern the night and day

are blackened

and without electricity

we are left to wander in the darkness

in fact, our very own reflections are a mystery,

how can we survive,

they say

you weren’t delivered by the stork, you were dropped

no one to greet you in this thick, blackened abyss,

nothing but the sound you made when you landed, pop

it can’t possibly be a home

luck was not in your favor

in this game of cards

borne into riots

roots that are malnourished

trees without sap

your home is a

hollowed out family tree

but

we will be alright

they don't understand that

we set the cards alight, and that

we make our own heat

our own power

our own light

yes,

it is a world very foreign to them

the flickering flame too uncertain

the dancing lights too dizzying

so don’t bat your eye at those who tell you anything different

for we are all engineers of our future

journeyman

journeying forward

dont slouch those shoulders

when they try and discourage you

you are the essence of light

your brightness only makes theirs seem insignificant

you come from adversity

and have overcome it too

yes, brothers and sisters,

we will be alright
