Surface Scars
All people say things will be one way when they get married,
But after the paper is signed nothing is the same.
Countless arguments, tears, and fighting,
Determination becomes necessary to continue,
Eventually it feels like this is all marriage is.
Frustration, resentment, and anger consume your soul.
Guilt becomes the glue that holds you together.
How can you possibly move forward together?
Is love enough to push you the rest of your life?
Justification is another excuse you begin to use when,
Killing yourself inside is all that you’re accomplishing.
Losing your hope can mean losing yourself in your sadness,
“Mom” becomes the only name you know.
No one else matters except for your children, you think quietly but
Openly it must look as if you’re truly happy,
Pressing your feelings back inside trying not to
Quit your marriage and
Run away as far as you can to relive your dreams you missed.
Surface scars form on your subconscious,
Toughness begins to fade away and you just think “I can’t,”
Until my children finish school,” I just have to remain,
Vivacious and polite to everyone I see.
“When the time comes I’ll know, I’ll quit my
X-ray job at the office and pursue my medical degree”
You think maybe you’ll be part of Doctors without Borders and travel to
Zimbabwe, but then again, you may just stay and choose to love. All people say things will be one way when they get married,
