The Survival Shield

When life faded away,
she brightened my day.
Darkness surrounded my clouded heart,
But her light opened my void.

I needed her in my life
To save me from my own strife.
Life came and went
But her presence was eminent.

A cancer battle drew us closer
Yet threatened to knock her down like a bulldozer
Tests eased worries,
But my heart still ached with concern.

Would I have her much longer?
I knew I needed to be stronger.
The shield I held was slowly being broken
Why couldn’t this just go away with a token?

Tears wept the stark bathroom floor
When hair fragments puddled near the door.
Our indescribable bond
Could soon be gone.

I was not ready for denial
So I prayed for her survival.
God answered my prayers.
There was no need for scares.

My mother had been healed
We no longer needed a shield.
June was fully alive
And that I was all I needed to survive.
