Sweet Little Indian Boy

I was once walking in a dream

When the dream took me to a little house beyond the end

Where there were many little boys and many little girls playing on the sand, just round the bend.

As I walked to the house, I found a boy so without joy

I had to inquire as to why his mood was so dire.

“Dear little Indian boy weeping on the stairs,

Why do you weep so, when the Sun is still out there?”

“I’ve nothing else to do you see,”

Said the boy in reply to me,

“My horse has gone and run away,

So I’m stranded on this sandy bay.”

“But the sand is soft beneath your toes,”

I responded as I smelled a rose.

“I yearn not for white sand tickling my toes,

I long for grass so long you forget when it grows.

For the prairie and the herd of cattle,

For my hunting bow that doesn’t rattle.”

“Sweet little Indian boy, who yearns not for the sea,

I wish I could take you home since it’s where you want to be.”

As I replied and idea hit, and so I said to him,

“Dear little Indian boy come with me, and show me a grin,

I’ll take you home to the prairie, to be with your kin.”

And so we journeyed along in this dream,

I must say we made quite the team.

As we neared our destination I noticed my little Indian grew up,

He was no longer alike to a little wolf pup.

We reached the prairie, the dream was coming to an end,

I dreaded to leave my longtime friend.

But his family embraced him with welcoming arms,

And I knew I had to leave him or else do harm.

So in the glare of the sunrise, that morning we did part.

But the sweet little Indian boy will always have a place in my heart.
