The Sycophant
You’re in a mood, they say
Laughing at me from the trees
Eyes are squinted all wide
Floating where the sky used to be
When it’s late at night, they say
Just around 9:30
You lay on the ground
And stop being flirty
You’re acting funny, they say
And I know what they mean
Some things are heavy
When you’ve got nowhere to lean
But ideas need to come out
And the ones that don’t
Fit in my mouth
Come out of my eyes, and fall on the ground
Because my dad think in points
In scores and in numbers
And I can’t talk to my mom
Because she thinks I’m dumber
Than the friends that I have
That make fun of thoughts
Things that I waste my time with
The toxic thoughts that caught me
They don’t let go
And I’m drowning in stress
But I choke on the water
Because my friends know me best
But they don’t know why
I get quiet at night
The places I go in my mind
When I’m not feeling alright
You’re in a mood, they say
Looking at where I used to be
Their eyes held shut
By their hate for my thoughts and me.
