Take Your Mark

Waiting behind the block

My ears stand attentive, listening for his voice.

“Please step up to the block.”

My head erases all surroundings and suddenly I am alone.

“Take your mark.”

His voice readies my body.

My fingers lace around the bottom of the block, while my back muscles tense

Toes hold on tightly to the white cement

Calves and hamstrings tighten, waiting to be released
