Talent

My talent is who I am. When I open my mouth, it will forever sound like I’m singing. My grandfather tells me all the time, “baby your voice is slick as honey.” Singing is apart of me; singing is who I am. When I sing you can hear every ancestor’s hymn that’s apart of me. When I sing you don’t hear me, you hear my great-grandmother who is inside of me. In the same way, singing is apart of me, dance is in my every movement. When I walk into a room it feels like I’m always moving to a beat. When I dance, you can see every ancestor besides me, and when I’m not singing or dancing, I’m balled up in a corner doing the final artistry that is me: writing. When I write you can see the flood of emotions come out of me. All three talents make me who I am.

Over the past few years, I have been embracing my talents. Embracing my talents became my escape from any outside problems that I had to face. Being talented allows me to touch others in ways words can not explain. It allows me to look forward to expressing myself in ways that no one else could relate to. My willingness to dance, sing, and write poetry gave me a jump into reality. When I look out into the world, I don't see brokenness; I see Music, Majorette, Louder than a bomb - all types of ARTS. humans are born into a system of going to school to be successful in life, but their creativity is not included. You are told when you are young to get a job that you love to do but when it comes to being in love with the ARTS, it’s hard to stick with it for the rest of your life.

The system tells us that it’s good to have a talent, but everyone has the exact same talent as you; so stick to something you can make a living off of. The mentality of this is wrong with debilitating consequences: it strips people away from their ability to do something that comes beautifully natural to them. The real truth is everyone doesn’t have the same talents. Everyone’s is different in many ways this allows people to bring something different to the table. This allows me to have an advantage in life. I’m able and willing to switch all my talents up if I have to. I could also put them all together at once if I needed to. Talent has shaped me into the person I am. Being able to sing I have sung all my worries away. When I dance I dance all my tough times away. When I write poetry and speak it I allow others to put themselves in my shoes and get a glimpse of who I am. Also what I go through physically and mentally. My three years of  pain would’ve been ten times worse if I didn’t find myself. With all my talents I was able to have my breakthrough.
