The Talk

16, the age of freedom, the year I will be able to do as

I please, the year that will be

All about me

As I sat waiting for my parents to give me my car keys

They looked at me and said let’s have the talk

And not the normal talk you’re thinking of, the police talk

The talk almost every black kid has seen

You know the keep your hands where they can see them

Don’t talk back, say sir and ma’am repeatedly

As I sat there listening I could feel my child innocence go away

But kept thinking I’m just a kid, why would they harass me?

Until you get pulled over for overly tinted windows and your reaction is

Please don’t shoot me
