They say that cats have nine lives

I say we have much more

For every person takes up knives

And carves into our doors

They leave us with a lonely thought

Even when the door is locked

Because those we shut away hold tight

They stand their ground throughout the night

And even when they pass on by

Their steps are like a lullaby

And when they chip the wood away

The sanctioned scars settle in to stay

Though it hurts for them to carve

We crave their whittled works of art

And though the guards stand watch each day

The folly conceals the one true fate

The truth is only but a knock

There is no key to turn the lock

Who can defend against them all

The ones who only need to call

They take room inside our homes

They invade our inner core

They follow in the paths we roam

They’re always knocking on our doors
