Tell Me

Tell me.

Do you remember the first time you opened your eyes?

When the sunlight flooded your vision,

When the world seemed like it was made up of everything but lies,

When there was no such thing as indecision,

And every food you ate was made of milk and honey,

Because it always seemed to be sunny;

I remember.

Those days I played in the large forest pond,

Where the unending bond,

Between your friends and yourself seemed to last forever,

Under any sort of weather;

I do.

But then it was over in a flash,

And soon enough you were dashing from class to class,

Your friends were changing, and so where you,

What were you to do?

I changed.

We try to fit in,

We try to look cool,

But when you have different opinions,

Your old friend sends minions,

To destroy you;

I was hurt.

We all have been,

When the hateful words seem to seer into your brain,

Without refrain,

Words like ugly, fat, and worthless,

Make you feel inadequate and hopeless,

They spit these words like venom,

When you wear leggings instead of denim,

When your favorite color is black instead of pink,

And all you can think,

Is why me?

I thought so.

Now the sunlight is clouded by the mist of betrayal,

And your only friends seem to be the knife at the bottom of your drawer,

And the blood that pours down your wrist with a roar,

Or that voice in your head that makes you cry at night,

And the unending pain that proves bullying causes fright.

I have felt this.

I am sure you have too,

But never feel like it is the end,

Never feel like you have to pretend,

To be someone you are not,

Because one day,

Those old friends who turned into enemies,

Will never matter as much as these,

New people in your life who lift you up,

And make you feel whole again.

I know now.

That the blood still running through my veins is mine,

I am me,

I am the person I will always be,

I may have changed,

I almost gave up,

But I am stronger now,

And that my friends,

Is not just luck,

But rather because I pulled myself out of the muck.

I am stronger now.
