Tempting Death

Peeking from my closed

Eyelids I held my breath,

Hoping that as he nosed

His way towards death

That nothing would seem

Different than normal

And that he would deem

Me just a shadow, not paranormal.

Yet I knew that as he drew

Closer to my waiting senses

That he already knew

Of my waiting hand. My offenses

Have withered away and I run away,

Hiding again from the one I prey.
