Texts to Mom

Buzz.

My phone rings.

It’s mom again.

“Miss you sweetie,” she writes, as if those words hold meaning.

“I miss you too. I wish…” I go to respond.

Backspace. Backspace. Backspace.

“I’m sorry for deserting you, after you deserted me.”

Backspace. Backspace. Backspace.

“Don’t ever talk to me again!”

But I don’t mean those words.

Backspace.

“Please leave the man that hurt me.”

Pause

"Please leave the man in jail."

Pause.

"Please leave the man that ruined their lives."

Tears.

Backspace.

I close my phone.

All I need is for her to take my side.

All I need is my mom back.
