Thankful
I will never forget that night,
Ashes and thick smoke tearing it down.
How it all happened, I do not know.
The night was frigid and damp as I stood,
Watching the flames engulf my home.
The flashing lights of the fire trucks lit the sky.
Men and women work frantically to rid the fire,
That felt like it took forever.
Morning,
A new beginning as I drive up the ash covered road.
I turn the car off, step out, and slowly head to the house.
Charred, broken, and still smoking as I go inside,
My home, my belongings, everything is gone.
I pick up a broken picture frame, brushing away the ash.
I simply smile at it, my daughter.
I may have lost my belongings,
But I did not lose her.
