Thanksgiving

She said being thankful was a lot like learning how to swim...

I guess that’s why I drowned.

I began with the sun and cursed in the name of cancer.

The moon, and all her glories, controlling the fury of tides.

How could I thank an unrelenting god?

Why, I could praise the air?

The same poisonous air taking your brothers and sisters away.

Today I could give thanks to the earth,

although her rotting fast approaches.

Do I thank the people who have ruined her too?

Do I thank him for taking her childhood because there’s a better piece of him now walking the earth?

How about myself and pain?

To exist I am conditioned to believe I would be grateful for this.

And maybe gratitude is only for the grateful.
