That's A No for Me

There I am

On this island

so serene, the flow of crystal water

everyone is content with remaining in paradise

Why? I ask myself.

Is it because it's far away from the concrete slabs of pavement  we call home?

Or perhaps it's a break from life, a hiatus if you will.

A chance to start anew--reconnect with the natural human instincts

Well that may be fine for them

But for me, there's still a whole world to see

A world that's waiting

And I mean, really waiting for me.

It knocks on the door

I've hid behind the curtains, peered through the fish eye lens

It calls to my window with a stereo over its shoulders

Hoping that it can woo the smart girl from her shell of a life

And sometimes, when I'm too stubborn or too naive,

It just taps its fingers lightly on my backs.

Not persistent, not aggressively.

Just. . . waiting. Patiently.

For me to realize that I'm not content with living in a dream state

I need my crazy.

I need to go insane

and come to terms with the fact

that as I look around

the people lounging, relaxing

are merely a mirage.

They can afford to be in a dream state

You know why?

Because they are the dream. They belong to me. In my head.

It's time for me to see my dreams come into fruition

Dust the sand off.

Wave goodbye to my imaginary friends

Leave on a journey that's both crazy and thrilling

But it will be alright.

You know why?

Because I've got my crazy with me.

My crazy keeps me up at night,

pushes me to pursue my wants.

I want to get off this island

away from isolation

it's time to join the world.

I can't remain sane

I can't just let the pieces fall where they may

All those cliche sayings were designed to give people an easy out

A common phrase that's repeated so many times

It's ingrained in our vocabulary.

I refuse to let that be me.

So to answer the question, No.

I don't think I'll let go of my crazy.

I'll keep it with me

tucked away in my pocket

or suitcase

or knee socks.

And when all physical remnants of clothing

have been ripped to shreds

by the wolf that is society

I will remember that I never needed to put my crazy anywhere.

The crazy was me, just as much as I had it.
