That's the Thing About Change

That's the thing about change.

You can't see it until it's too late.

Like a present moment that is not comprehended until it becomes the past.

A driver constantly checking the rearview mirror.

Our past is our present is our future is our life.

Is that all we are?

A compilation of our past Of events that have already happened.

Of leaves already fallen, landslides already slid

Like rocks do we sit, stuck to the bed unable to move or get up

too tired to protest the pounding waves and rushing currents

Do we notice the flowers before they die or do we

remember that they were there because we now notice the distinct loss

The missing.

Do we blunder along, walking backward trying to comprehend

the constant game of catch-up that leaves us falling on our ass

like leaves aimlessly drifting through the river

headed nowhere
