That's Who I Am
Someone once asked me
“Just who are you? Who do you think you are?”
I had to sit back and think, bite back a laugh as I knew deep down
I didn’t know who I was
I am a number to some, a grade point average to others.
That’s how the college scholarships askme to define myself
I‘m sick of trying to put my self worth in numbers right after senior year started
I’m sick of thinking about my actions, my service hours, my activities, and about trying to make
a piece of paper look good
I then asked myself the question
“If I was a word in the dictionary, what would I be known as when people turned to my page?
What would they see?”
I knew then what I wanted people to see
I wanted them to see the moments I laughed, the moments I cried, the moments where I wanted
To scream
but never made a sound
I wanted those strangers’ eyes to look at each letter and think ‘this is a great girl’
Because what makes me, me is what I value most in myself
I am loyal, I worry about my friends and their well being and I am there to offer my shoulder
For when they need to cry.
I can make them laugh and ease the pain their day brought.
I can make decisions and stick to a path.
I may be small, but I find ways to work around it.
I am adaptable. I am me.
So when I see that person that asked me who I am
I’ll smile and say
“I am Sam. That’s who I am.”
