The Ledge Within
You see him waiting at the light,
just another stranger in the night.
He wears a coat to block the chill,
standing perfectly, completely still.
But you don’t know how long he stood
upon the ledge above the wood,
staring down into the gray,
wishing he could float away.
We check the time and cross the street,
ignoring everyone we meet.
We think a person must be fine
if they are standing in our line.
Because the world is trained to see
the mask we wear so gracefully.
We look at clothes, we look at skin,
but never see the ledge within.
