The Persistence of Memory
The clock is ticking in the hallway
Tick…. tock Tick…tock
The long hand moving slowly to the rhythm of that sound
Warm sunlight coming through the window announces that morning has arrived but usually I am up before the dawn, pumping arms and sweating as my legs carry me through the darkened streets of our town
But not today
Sometimes I wish that time would cease and the watch on my wrist would stop, melting and stretching into my skin… like in Dali’s painting The Persistence of Memory
Hmmm.. Memory…
I look over at her lying beside me….
Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh
In the corner of my mind, I see her in a white dress with sequins sparking in the sun then joining hands to feast on the flesh of Jesus
Nowadays we occasionally drink wine with dinner
Lighted candles mingled with the scent of flowers rise to the heavens like incense while a cat sits in the living room window, its tail twitching in time to the clock… an avenging angel that guards the gate to our paradise
