Their Power, My Faith

The Scholarship said,

List why you need financial assistance

for college

And let it show the struggles you have been through due to needing financial help.

Then, we will determine your results

I wonder if it's that simple?

I am seventeen, hispanic, born in San Diego.

I went to school here, never moved, always been here

In the yellow old house near the corner of the street.

I am the only daughter so far that has thought about going to college.

The steps of becoming a young adult lead me here,

From the stress of college applications, to scholarships needing to be filled out

My scores, their standards, their cost,

My financial need, I sit down and write

On how I could explain to them what my education will be comprised of and what it’s going to take to achieve it

It’s not easy to know how to explain it so you can understand

at seventeen, my age. But I guess I’m what

I feel and see and hear; to other students, I hear you:

Hear you, hear me -we two- you, me, connect through the worry of the future

(I hear my sister too). My sister --who?

Well, she asks for advice and worries for me, she motivates me, she too plans on going to college.

I like to read books and tutor to children and go on adventures and hang out with my friends

I'd like to have some weight lifted off my shoulder

Or faith to be brought upon my family

I guess being happy doesn't make me not worry like

my parents are probably too.

So will I write in my scholarship application all my family's worries and struggles or just mine?

To the scholarship, This will not determine my faith

But it will

A part of me, Scholarship

Your are support

Yet I can't chose for you, as much as I’d like for it to be me

That's a Scholarship

Sometimes I wish I was the one to chose

I know I'm not the only one who needs this

But it happens to everybody, that's true!

As I learn more of myself from your questions

I guess you can entertain from my story too

Although you are the one to choose my faith

And the one with the power.

This is my point of view
