Them and I

They spoke, informatively
The time somebody told me
My mind is quick, sharp,
And full of wit.

Who was I to believe?
For my mind was covered by a tarp, filled with thoughts so dark
They’re full of lies I assumed, yet never would I admit,
Though I smiled with a thank you.

They thought that? Only God knew.

Once he expressed
People do like you

Was it shallow or vain?
For I to say, your eyes must be strained

Or the time she told me
To keep trying

Was it rude or insane?
To not be attentive
And quit
After all my suffering and pain

She went on to explain
She has suffered through worse,
And even similar pains.

Yeah I’m sure you have
Like the time you were stabbed
By your best friend
I warned you, she was not one to rely on.

So I asked her to express
A time she might have been depressed
She replied with a simple nod

Wow. I thought. You have come to be such a snob

She looked at me and this is what she said
For I do not have all the answers
Nor do I know why loved ones of yours are dead
Oh wait it was cancer.
In a brutal tone.

What have you become?
Now you are dead to me
No longer a friend
Nor an enemy
Though you do not see
I wish you would vanish
Into the deep dark sea.
And sink beneath
The Mariana Trench.
“DON’T TALK TO ME!”

Was once a thought that had
Evolved into an expression
And she went on to proclaim
The friendship we once shared.
But I began to differ.

I thought isn't it sad,
That the ones who betray you
Were never your enemies to begin with.
