Then I Grew Up

When I was a young girl,

I always read storybooks.

When I was a young girl,

The underdog had bullies, monsters, and crooks,

But the underdog came on top every time.

When I was a young girl,

I watched movies and cartoons about heroes and kids just like me

When I was a young girl,

I always believed dreams would come true.

When I was a young girl,

I thought growing up meant freedom

Then I grew up

When I grew up, I found that even the nastiest villains came on top

When I grew up,

I learned that destinies were for everyone,

But dreams weren’t.

Growing up didn’t mean freedom, not unless you were fighting for a paycheck.

But when I became truly grown and mature,

I realized I bound myself in those chains.

While we can’t accomplish all our dreams,

We can take our destinies and change it.

If you want to be a lawyer, fight for it.

If you want that new promotion, fight for it.

The day I grew up, truly,

I wanted to be better. So I fought for it.
