But Then I Learned

I know

What it is like to be hated

To be treated unfairly and broken apart

And to think I've experienced

The worst of man's heart--

But then I learned

What it is like to be ignored

To be valued too little to inspire

Even the most undesirable of passions

To be worthless in the eyes of some

To think I've seen the worst of what's to come--

But then I learned

What it is like to be invisible

And so incapable of reaching another soul

That I go unnoticed forever.

Indeed, I live in a world by myself

With so little truth discerned

Having only spoken through glass

But this I've learned:

To be hated is no curse--

Indifference is worse
