There and Then, Here and Now

I didn’t often find myself dreaming, but when I did, it was about the place

where reality was a fairytale and everything was painted over with a fresh coat of yellow.

I was their queen: all hail the ruler of the small superior

To each their own but ours was the best, the brightest star in the discernibly small sky

the kicking legs to the sway-worthy music,

the boys and girls that would make their way into each others’ arms.

It wasn’t that I missed this

I missed you

My mind made for terrible driving conditions with the fog you cast on me

Your sickeningly enthralling smell, especially fresh from your neck.

It could have been sweat, I wouldn’t have cared

because it was yours.

It didn’t matter now. It wouldn’t matter again because you left

and I stayed
