There's a Boy on a Mattress
and fireworks exploding everywhere
but the room is very dark
and the sparks illuminate only him
but the sparks are very small
and the mattress has no bounce
but the child is very young
to fully grasp these facts
and they tell him to reach for something
and he keeps jumping
but I don’t understand why he keeps jumping
See, there is nothing there
Everything is dark and muffled and he
is growing up and he keeps jumping
and I don't understand why he keeps jumping
as the world around him gets louder and louder
but it never turns to day, the boy
jumps less often now but he
looks up and waits for something to change
and everything around him stays the same
and he laments how, surely
everyone else has caught a star
and he wonders if he’s to catch a star
and finally, he decides to really jump
and he’s completely sure that he’ll reach
this “it” sometime...
but he’s realistic now
and I don’t understand
why I keep jumping
