There’s no need

I can’t put my hair up, they’ll notice something different

I can’t hang out with her, she and my friends are different

Keep that dress away from me! My normal clothes are different.

I needed an instagram because everyone else had one

I didn’t join math team because no one else was there

I talked behind my friends backs because wasn’t that what everyone wanted to talk about?

I pretended not to have my homework because everyone else forgot.

I spent so long trying to fit in,

trying to “be unique” without being aberrant.

I thought it would be easiest to stay in this lane,

but traffic was so bad here that it stopped.

Then I made new friends.

I left my hair down for them, but they told me “there’s no need.”

I tried to hide my passions from them, but they told me “there’s no need.”

I pretended to forget my homework, but they pulled theirs out and told me “there’s no need.”

I asked them to tell me if I looked weird in my dress, but they told me “there’s no need.”

I asked why they never complain about each other, and they told me “there’s no need.”

and I wondered if there was a reason for being like everyone else

when the person I enjoyed being was me.

After some consideration, I came to the conclusion,

 “No, there’s no need”
