These Small Things

I woke to sunlight and flecks of dust
and they were beautiful.
Instead of stretching and rising from bed,
I laid in silent, half-lidded amusement,
watching something I had never taken the time to notice.

All they did was float and sink in patterns I couldn’t predict.
So very much like life; for an instant
we are traveling in yellow light,
we glitter, shine brightly,
and disappear.
