THEY SAID

It's a free country, they said.

There are free rights, they said.

You won't be victimized because of your unchangeable aspects, they said.

They said that everyone will be treated equal in the United States of America.

They said that this is the land without discrimination.

They said that you would not be judged based on your attributes not in relation to the content of your character.

But I realized all the things that they said were lies.

They said "it's because you're black" that you're stupid.

They said "it's because you're a faggot" that you cannot go far.

They said "it's because you're ugly" that you're worthless.

But later they said that these slurs were a joke and one should take it lightly.

They said they have a friend who is black so they're not racist.

They said they have a friend who is Mexican so they have no prejudice against blacks.

I don't know what's funnier about what they said: the fact that the "Mexican friend" is not even Mexican but is rather Cuban or the fact that because having a friend outside of one's race does not mean one is accepting of all races.

They said they have a friend who is homosexual so they're not homophobic.

They said they have a friend who was bi-curious so they're not against equality.

I don't know what's funnier about what they said: the fact that having a friend who is gay does not mean you're against love or the fact that having a friend who was bi-curious does not mean that you are a supporter of all sexual orientations.

They said they have a friend who is outspoken so the friend is not hidden behind societal's beauty standards.

They said they have a friend who is a virgin so they have nothing against my inability to attract.

I don't know what's funnier about what they said: the fact that they clearly pity my below average looks and believe confidence is simple and easy to inherit after years of being treated as if I was invisible or the fact that because in this society, regardless of how nice, funny or smart you are, if you don't have looks, you don't have value.
