they say that you are dead

they say that you are dead

I never went to a funeral

people bury you alive inside their heads

       and turn away

turn away, from the truth they know

they make our papier-mâché reality

but you’re still the only thing that can fill our hollow humanity

you’re still the only water that can

       make my self-made deserts livable

my well is dry but you

       are unobtainable

where’ve you been so long? I despair

but I know, that you are there

so hear a cry from a mind just wandering alone at night

I’m carrying a car door in a desert

       but what for

and again I am the punch line but I’m searching for the water

       desperately trying

to overcome my sickness

cleanse my soul in all your richness

I don’t know why I ever thought I could summon you with pens and knives

our hearts are fragile, they break

       when they’re mishandled

come give me wings, I will slowly learn to fly

and take off into the sky

are you here, can you hear

a lost child’s cry of faith

I need something to trust you are all that I have

I die,

if you fade away

you bind together our fragile humanity

       incomprehensible

when all else has changed you remain

       unchangeable

yet, people spend their whole lives just trying to find you

they look at their surroundings but forget to look inside

that’s where you hide

masked by all our fears

and the tears which years of bitterness have pressed on our hearts

but if I call on you will you still surface, oh love?
