The Thing

Swooping down on wings set all a-glitter
By the starlit sky
The Thing came.
Its identity remains a mystery to me,
Even to this very day.

Have you ever seen a bird so big
It could carry away an eagle's nest
If it wanted to?
Its head seemed to be tipped with flame
Or blood. Everything about it exuded
A raw power, but it seemed to be harmless.
All it did was touch down in the pond
For a few heartbeats, catch
A frog in its long beak, and take flight once more.
