Thoughts from A Winter Wonderland

Dear Winter,

I may never understand your powerful ways,

How summer can turn to winter in a matter of days

Why you must exchange the sun’s rays for a chilling frost

To the numbness of frostbites, when all feeling is lost

From bathing suits to warm fur coats,

Hats and gloves for luxurious boats

The warmth to the cold, what does it all mean?

Always ever-changing from scene to scene

I may never know, but I do know this,

That the inevitable cold may bring us true bliss

Despite the snow and ice and freezing cold,

There’s a special joy shared by young and old

You bring us closer- from far and wide,

The cleansing white snow gives us nothing to hide

So, we snuggle in and shelter from the snow

Besides, what would we do without hot cocoa?

Thus, you bring warmth like never before,

When else do carolers come knocking at our door?

Only in winter can we have a peaceful ‘silent night’

To hear our thoughts with nothing in sight

Blanketed in white, the world falls asleep,

Plants growing underground without making a peep

Soon there will be spring, but not quite yet!

Winter’s not finished getting everything set!

I wanted to thank you for this mysterious season

For giving us the time to think without rhyme or reason

Winter, I’m sorry for your bad reputation,

But remember our love with every child’s elation

“It’s a SNOW DAY” they cry ready for the new snow to become their work of art

Never in summer could such joy fill the heart

I can’t imagine what life would be like,

With no snowmen, no sledding, no candy Klondike

No Christmas, no skiing, no backyard snow-ball fights,

No snow forts, no hockey, no windy cold nights!

So thank you for being here four months of the year,

Adding life and warmth to this hemisphere!

Sending you love from one of your fans,

Who will always prefer snow over a beach full of sand!
