Thunder

Alone in the middle of the night

A creak, a flash of light

Darkness shattered after a crash

You jump in bed

Throwing the covers over your head

You may not be a child

But you're still afraid of the thunder

It reminds you of the fighting

The screams, the shouting

The pain, the tears

The way it made you grow old before your years

The rain reminds you of how many times you've cried yourself to sleep

Begging to escape it all

Curled up in a ball

Pillow over your head

Hiding yourself away

You clench your teeth

And hope the tears won't come

Wishing it would stop

Until you break down

And cry yourself to sleep
