The Tick

So you want to know what makes me tick?

The (primary) education system-it makes me sick!

Throwing stress at students every which way

Then pile on homework at the end of each day.

If you ask them to explain, they’ll laugh in your face

No real learning happens in this place.

They say we’ll learn to accept this hell

That they lock us in daily with the sound of a bell.

Forgive me now, I don’t mean to be cruel,

But this is what I’m thinking when sitting in school

Getting told to behave for 8 hours on end,

Tell me, how would you fare here, Friend?

Would you be kind, would you comply?

If you say yes, we’ll both know it’s a lie.

I can’t be expected to absorb anything here-

“Well then you had better learn to study, my dear.”

Teachers claim to understand, they tell us they ‘know’

But we all know they aren't the ones running this show

They are all just puppets, look at their strings!

Oh, what sadness all of this brings

To the ones who know how to sniff out the rat

I can’t understand how we deal with that.

All the lies, the deceit, the doings done wrong!

And to think, we've all been here so long

Long like twelve or thirteen years...

How many of those do you think were drowned in tears?

Yet no one will stand, no one demands change.

Oh! How this system makes me deranged.

Please, do help, my dear, dear friend-

Help the system start working again

Help the kids learn how to think

Don’t bury them in knowledge, just give them a drink!

They’re kids, for Christ’s sake-they just want to play

We honestly can’t coop them up all day.

What else could our kids be learning to do?

Well, that’s up to me. and it’s up to you.
