Tides

drifting

sinking

down

far below the tides

watching the surface grow

ever farther

ever colder

that slow sort of reverse floating

as everything becomes imperceptibly darker

and the light

flickers

and the strength to push off the bottom

seems enormous

the sand seems to pull you down

to become part of the sediment

your heart beats sluggishly

as bubbles slip through

your fingers

and what remains for you

above the surface?
