As Time Passed By
As Time Passed By
I leave my heart in an icebox
Only to be brought out when I need to order emotions on the rocks
But I haven’t given that order to the bartender yet
All I say to him is “I keep condoms in my glove box.”
He smiles politely and looks away
Another hit and miss, I toss a shot back and try to behave
I don’t need the nucleus of my humanity, so I’ll keep it in it’s glacial grave
As time passed by, I met someone worth while, believe you me, I put up a fight
He came stumbling in like a freight train, me the metaphorical deer in the head lights
Liquid courage was his father, who taught him how to act and what to say
Cocaine was his mother, who he pleaded with to stay
She tucked him in some nights and left him crying when she was gone the next day
As time passed by, we didn’t make love, we simply had sex
He was heartless and so was I, we’d both been hurt by an ex
Stupid me, put the walls down and he found my ice chest
Opened it, looked inside, picked up my heart and warmed it in his hands
It was bruised and beat up, barley beating, being held together with rubber bands
“it’s beautiful, it’s shame you’re wasting it”
He placed it back inside me and it was hot like it was roasting over a fire pit
As time passed by, my heart grew a deep red, occasionally missing a beat
He made it thud and pump, swell and inflate
It was no longer a chunk of useless fleshy meat
That is until he went to go visit his mother for a week
I waited for him until my heart started to hurt
So I slipped it back into the icebox to harden
I put a padlock around the chest, took it out back and buried it under my rock garden
The last words he said, were still ringing in my head
“I’ll be back in no time” He cooed “Trust me”
As time passed, it took it’s toll and left me old and dusty
