As Time Wears On
Time and time again I put my heart out on the line,
Handing the tender, fragile thing to the first stranger I can find.
Despite the fear I feel at this bizarre trust, my hope smothers the dread.
Yet, surprise I feel when given back to me, the heart is cold and dead.
Time and time again I put my heart out on the line,
Hoping that I will finally find one who will treat it oh so kind.
Over time the beating has slowed and the pain less hard to bear,
And I have slowly learned that I must try my very best not to care.
Time and time again I now keep my heart inside
And when it tries to leap out, down it must be tied.
I have become cold and bitter, my soul unfeeling,
For inside my chest I have a heart that needs healing.
