Times Have Changed

Times have greatly changed

Little girls used to be able to run around shirtless without a care in the world

They used to be able to look at themselves in the mirror and say “I really like me”

Girls would talk and never would they say a thing about body image

But now?

They run around in loose t-shirts because they can’t stand to see what they call ‘belly rolls’ on themselves

Girls look in the mirror and critique every freckle on their face along with their frizzy hair

Now, body image seems to be the only thing they talk about amongst themselves

Because society has taught them to only love the girls in the magazines

Who have been edited and made skinnier, tanner, and given a thigh gap

This is unacceptable.

This makes me sick because no girl should look in the mirror

And forget that all those freckles are also called angel kisses

And no girl should forget that the frizzy hair she has comes from her mom, who is also beautiful

One thing that I have promised myself is that

I will teach my daughter so much self-love.

If I can’t even accomplish that,

I have no idea why I am still here.
