Told me so
Dear me,
It’s interesting how letters start out with that.
With a “dear”
As if we are close
To each other.
It’s not like anyone
Could tell the difference,
We live in the same body
Have the same voice
Same thoughts
Same tastes
Same hates
Same likes
Except, you’re happy
And I’m not.
You’re excited to go
To school
To work
To practice
And I’m not.
You’re glad you’re alive
You thank people for their time
You like being with people
You love being productive.
I love to sleep.
I know you were scared
When they gave me a name.
I was scared too.
I wanted to escape
To go to a place where I’d never be hurt
Never be ostracized by
Friends
Family
Him.
So I tried.
But you stopped me
You stopped me.
You. Stopped. Me.
It was like you loved me
Just me
Sad
Mopey
Me.
And I was still scared.
They found out that I tried to die
But I didn’t.
Because of you.
You wanted to be alive more than I wanted to be dead
We went to
Therapists
Doctors
Hospital
And you refused to give up.
You told me day
after day
after day
That we’re happy to be alive.
You pointed out the sun
And the butterflies.
I like butterflies.
We accepted babysitting assignments
Even though they knew what happened.
Because you knew I needed it.
I love babies.
You made us get up in the morning
And go to school.
We took this class
What was it?
Something with medicine.
You wanted us to help people.
I really liked that class.
I guess you were right when you said
We have reasons to
live
Love
Be happy
You told me it’s
Okay
To feel.
Well, I guess you can tell me
“I told you so”
That’s okay,
I’m always right.
Love,
Me.
