Tomorrow

Tomorrow.

They say it like the word itself heralds change

Tomorrow, they say as if that’s all it takes

But I can’t promise to feign my surprise

When the scene rises with the sun and I see

That elusive time, still waiting in the wings

Yesterday’s footsteps sinking in the shifting ground

Mark a path that leads to nowhere.

Its faint echo reverberates just loudly enough

At the edge of my consciousness

To feed my gnawing hope

That tomorrow will be the day:

I can faintly see its shadow, it’s just around the bend

And here goes the cat, chasing its tail again.
